Ok, there are 5 (well, 6 if you count the 1000631) different 8 valve heads for the volvo redblock engine. They are as follows:
1000160: the oldest head. Usually with big coolant passages, some have been made with small coolant passages. So called "little" head. Used with early b21 engines. The older type of cam cover fits to this, the newer does not.
1000398: Very similar to 1000160. Usually with big coolant passages, some have been made with small coolant passages. Also so called "little" head. Used with b19, b21 and b23 engines. The older type of cam cover fits to this, the newer does not.
1000530: Very similar exhaust and intake passages as on the -160 and -398 heads. Always with small coolant passages. This too is a so called "little" head. The newer type of cam cover fits to this, the older does not. The head mounted spark distributor can be used with this head. Used on b200 and b230 engines.
1000405: This is a so called "big" head. Has usually big coolant passages, but some are made with small coolant passages. Usually comes with k-jet injector holes, but some are without. The older type of cam cover fits to this, the newer does not. Used with some b23 engines. In euro version the H cam was used with this head on the volvo 242 GT with the b23e engine.
1000531: This too is a so called "big" head. Always with small coolant passages. The newer type of cam cover fits to this, the older does not. The head mounted spark distributor can be used with this head. Used on some b230 engines. This is considered to be the best std. 8v head. This head never has the k-jet holes as standard. They can be made to this head though.
The 405 and 531 flow pretty much the same. Both flow more than the 160, 398 or the 530. Small coolant passages are desirable, because with them the chance of blowing your head gasket is reduced signifanctly. Also the heads with small coolant passages are less prone to cracking.
The 160, 398 and 530 flow pretty much the same. They all can come with or without k-jet injector holes.
All heads, 1000160, 1000398, 1000530, 1000405 and 1000531, come with 44mm intake valve and a 35mm exhaust valve.
Then there is the heron head head, which i believe is 1000631. It is completeally different from any of the above. It has no combustion chamber.
