How To: Do a Donut
Spinning out ainââ¬â¢t just for them Duke boys anymore.

1. Gather Speed
First youââ¬â¢ll need to track down a car thatââ¬â¢s rear-wheel drive with a stick. Try borrowing your neighborââ¬â¢s ââ¬â¢Vette, Mustang, or kickass ââ¬â¢85 Toyota Corolla GT-S. Then find a spot with plenty of space and gravel, says Dan Wheldon, 2003 IRL IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year. ââ¬ÅI like to face the crowd and catch the eye of the hottest girl before I start my run,ââ¬Â he says. Ready? Put it in first and hit the gas. (Avoid the huddled masses, lest you get arrested on 847 charges of vehicular homicide.)
2. Turn, Turn
At the spot you want to spin, pull the emergency brakeââ¬âhard. ââ¬ÅThatââ¬â¢ll break traction in the rear,ââ¬Â says Wheldon. At the same time, whip the wheel all the way left or right to spin the opposite way. Once you feel the back end skid, drop the brake. Then mash the gas as you ââ¬Ålet the clutch out quickly, but with control.ââ¬Â Let up too slowly and youââ¬â¢ll be driving in a tiny circle. Even in a bitchinââ¬â¢ Camaro, thatââ¬â¢s lame.
3. Be Fast, Not Furious
The key, says Wheldon, is not to get carried away. ââ¬ÅOnce the car is spinning, use the gas to control speed and position,ââ¬Â he says. ââ¬ÅIf you want a small donut, brake harder. To open it up, give it more gas.ââ¬Â The added benefit of increased juice? Lots of smoke. Shove it to the floor and youââ¬â¢ll vanish in a slate-colored cloud of exhaust, just like David Copperfield or any other magical fairy.
4. Add Some Flair
Now become an attention hog. ââ¬ÅYou want plenty of smoke and hand gestures,ââ¬Â Wheldon says. ââ¬ÅThumbs-up is good, or those devil-horn thingies.ââ¬Â The coup de grâce? When you come to a stopââ¬âby hitting the clutch to put it in neutral and easing up on the throttleââ¬âreconnect with the girl you started out eyeing. Just make sure your backseat is nice and clean when she shimmies out of them daisy dukes.
